Did you know that poor handwriting skills can lead to lower grades?
Handwriting is one of the primary means by which teachers evaluate a student's learning. As the amount and intensity of the written work increases, the student will find it difficult to keep up with his peers, resulting in lower grades. Poor handwriting skills can lead to as much as a full letter grade lower than neatly produced work that is similar or identical!
And, the most interesting fact about the development of handwriting skills is that it begins at birth! As a child develops visual skills, grasping patterns, gross motor skills and body awareness, he is building upon the "basics" that will serve him when he is introduced to handwriting. Recent studies have shown that children who are doing well with handwriting skills in Pre-K achieve B averages in Second Grade in math and reading versus the C averages attained by children who did not perform well in handwriting in Pre-K.
